Researcher at Sunset + Vine - working on an ob-doc following the battle for the oldest trophy in sport and sailing’s most prestigious prize.

America’s Cup Uncovered was a behind-the-scenes weekly show broadcast on Channel 4 and Sky Sports 3 which followed sailors as they competed in events around the world for the oldest trophy in international sport; the America’s Cup.

The aim of the show was to cover the event in a way which captured a broader audience; the interest of non-sailors, with a focus on personalities and the unique story behind the America’s Cup.

Here’s a feature I put together at the opening of a show in January on Ben Ainslie, the world’s best Olympic sailor, as he announced his entry into the America’s Cup:

Another feature I worked on was the anniversary of one of the most famous years in the America’s Cup, 1987, when America won back the trophy after losing the event for the first time in 132 years:

Worked across various current affairs shows whilst at CNN International, researching on topical business stories, worldwide events, entertainment, and breaking news, as well as prompting on several big stories from the Arab uprisings, the Tsunami in Japan, and the Royal Wedding in London last year.

Prompted and researched across several live shows including Quest Means Business, Connect The World, World Sport, Piers Morgan Tonight when broadcast from London, and on-site with Anderson Cooper 360 during the Royal Wedding last year. Also contributed towards news scripting and selected studio wall images on CNN International’s morning news show, World 1.

Researched on one specific feature called ‘World @ Work’ - helped set up shoots and cast people; to focus on a variety of different people, their jobs, and why enjoy doing them - a ‘day in the life’ feature.

Involved with casting and setting up a shoot on a traffic warden and also a cocktail specialist - found interesting characters who could tell the story of their daily job in an enlightening manner.

Recorded new packages and features for BBC Essex.

An example is one on a local sport event; ‘Mud, Sweat and Gears’, a series of mountain-bike races aiming to encourage cycling in Essex; a county which is hosting the sport at the 2012 Olympics - interviewed competitors and organisers, recorded audio during the race. Can be listened to here.

Other packages broadcast on the station were on a range of topics: extreme weather (snow chaos), superfoods, historical sites, and more news style pieces.

Filmed and edited an interview with Katrina Hughes who trains on the highest level sailing squad in the U.K and is aiming to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London.

Fox Hunting: Five Years after the Ban - a short documentary

Put together a ten minute documentary for my final year TV project as part of my Multi-Media Journalism course at Bournemouth University (2010).

Fox hunting as an issue was chosen because of it’s topicality as the general election approached in 2010 and political parties were using the sport as a subject of debate.

In particular this package looks at what had changed since the 2004 Hunting Act and how people involved in the sport, from both sides, had adapted.

It’s filmed in an investigative style and I’m often on camera questioning those participating to try and get under the skin of the topic - to do this a coursemate helped film on each location.

When not on camera I filmed the visuals of the fox hunt, and later edited the piece using Final Cut.

There are parts which could have worked better visually, because of the restrictions of a small team some interviewees are not framed correctly - their facial expressions are not completely visible.

Key interviews include Otis Ferry, hunt saboteurs, The Countryside Alliance, Lush, and The Middle Way Parliamentary Group for Fox Hunting.

Here are two articles published in Bournemouth University’s ‘Wire’ newspaper: t he first is on students who were cooking and delivering breakfasts to make money, and the second article focuses on an interview I did with Dr Philip Nitschke who was promoting euthanasia at a conference in Bournemouth.

STA World Traveller Internship - Top 10

Applied for STA Travel’s World Traveller Internship, which involves video reporting and blogging whilst travelling the world. Out of around 2,000 entries I came in the top ten, although obviously it would have been better to win!

Created a video about myself in response to the travelling-related job title.

Kurt Schork Memorial Fund - Reuters

The Kurt Schork Awards are held in memory of the American journalist, Kurt Schork, who died on an assignment for Reuters in May 24, 2000 in Sierra Leone.

The awards reward ‘fearless’ freelance journalists, and ‘those journalists who cannot leave their country when the story becomes secondary to survival’.

Filmed the 2009 ceremony at Reuters headquarters in London along with Daniel Thomas and Rachel McAthy who were also on my course, and the videos can be viewed on the memorial website.

Cowes TV

Worked for Cowes TV at the end of 2009 on the Isle of Wight during Cowes sailing week.

This involved filming races and interviewing sailors, as well as editing together packages using Final Cut Pro for daily reports shown on their website and on big screens in the town.
